Words change their meaning through common use, as time progresses. Teenagers used to live in a sub culture where they spoke a different kind of language with words such as, ‘Cool, wicked, hip mad and rad’, totally confusing everyone else. However, even the older generations have been forced to climb on board with universally used words, particularly in the realms of the Internet and Cyber Space.

•Not so long ago memory was something you lost only with age, or through illness. Now you can lose it simply by pushing the wrong button. Neither could memory be improved by a screwdriver wielding technician
•An application was used when you applied for something such as a government benefit, employment, or a bank loan
•A program was something you watched as a television show, or a fancy piece of paper you were given at the opera, or ballet, to describe what was happening
•A cursor was a person who used bad language and to be totally avoided and ignored in respected company
•A keyboard was part of an instrument musicians used to create music
•A web was what a spider built to catch its prey. Now the ‘web’ catches a different kind of animal
•You received mail from a postman
•A virus made you ill and gave you a few of days off work. Now it is to be guarded against like it was the plague
•A mouse made women want to scream and jump on a chair and was a cat’s delight
•Forums were held at conferences where well known speakers voiced their knowledge
•A net was a aid used for catching fish and butterflies
•A screen was used to increase privacy
•A flat screen was a place where you printed a TShirt
•A monitor was a South American iguana, or bossy kid at school in positions of authority
•You used to put a roll of film in a camera
•Boats, space ships, or aeroplanes tied up at a docking station
•Chips were wrapped in newspaper and eaten with fish
•Language was oral communication
•A mother board involved ironing and washing
•You put your money into a CD at the bank
•A hard drive was when you took a long trip on a road
•A stick came from a tree and was used to light fires
•The source was the creation of something, not computer code
•Social networking was something you spent time doing at parties
•Information was something you gathered from books in a library
•A blackberry was a fruit you relished, not miniaturized computer equipment
•A computer was a large piece of equipment that usually sat on your desk, not something you could tuck into your pocket like a pen

As to all the other mystical Cyber Space language which has evolved to become part of our everyday life, we give little thought to. Terms such as PC, chat rooms, html, CPU (central processing unit) and search engine optimization. First there came the 8 inch floppy disk, which dwindled to a 5 inch floppy disk, before it became a 3 ½ inch hard disk, which has now evolved into a flash. There was a time when flashes were something you witnessed only at high profile cricket or football matches.

We may need an interpreter to speak our own language, as time progresses. A fact that has long been known by the older generation.
